Compact Nesting System

May 13, 2026 · Updated 2026-05-13 · ☕ 1 min read · Breeding does · Editor rating 4.8/5

Young rabbit kits together

The compact nesting system is built around the day-27 kindling window. Clean, draft-free wooden nest boxes and a calm, predictable layout give does the best chance at a warm, tidy litter.

Who it suits

Keepers of medium breeds who are breeding a few does and want a repeatable, low-stress nesting routine rather than a full production rig.

Why it works

  • Boxes sized for medium breeds let the doe shape her own nest.
  • Draft-free walls and a high lip keep kits warm and contained.
  • Predictable placement lets does settle before kindling.

Setup notes

Add the clean, bedded box around day 27–29 of gestation — earlier and it becomes a toilet, later and you risk kits on bare wire. One box per doe, replaced every few seasons. See our nest-box timing guide for the full timeline.
