Information we collect

Website analytics

We use Google Analytics, connected through Google Site Kit, to understand how visitors use the site. Examples include which pages are viewed, approximate location derived from your IP address, device and browser type, and how you arrived at the site. Google Analytics uses cookies. Google explains how it handles this data in its privacy policy. You can opt out with Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

We also use Cloudflare, which delivers and protects the site and provides privacy-focused web analytics. Cloudflare processes technical information such as IP addresses to do this. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Server logs

Like most websites, our hosting server records standard technical information for security and troubleshooting. This includes IP address, browser type, the pages requested and the date and time of each request.

Planner data stored on your device

Our free planners save what you enter in your own browser’s local storage. This includes breeding dates, checklists, habitat layouts, comparison lists and saved articles. This information stays on your device and is not sent to us. To remove it, clear this site’s data in your browser settings.

Amazon affiliate links

Some links on this site go to Amazon. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. When you follow an affiliate link, Amazon may set cookies so that a purchase can be attributed to us. Amazon does not share your name, contact details or the individual items you buy with us; we only see aggregated commission reports. See Amazon’s privacy notice.

Emails you send us

If you email us, we use your email address and message only to reply and to keep a record of the conversation.

Earlier newsletter sign-ups

An earlier version of this site had a newsletter sign-up form. Email addresses submitted through that form are stored in our website database. We are not currently sending a newsletter. To have your address deleted, email [email protected].

How we use information

  • To run, secure and maintain the website.
  • To understand which guides and planners are useful, so we can improve them.
  • To reply to messages and corrections.

We do not sell your personal information.

Your choices and rights

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and you can opt out of Google Analytics as described above. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • access the personal information we hold about you;
  • correct or delete it;
  • object to or restrict how it is used.

This includes residents of the European Union or United Kingdom, and California. To make a request, email [email protected].

How long we keep information

Analytics data is kept according to our Google Analytics retention settings. Server logs are kept for a limited period for security purposes. Emails are kept for as long as needed to deal with your message.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when our practices change. The date at the top shows when it was last revised.
